Comparative Study of the Gayageum and the Koto

Abstract.There are a variety of East Asian zithers, including Chinese guzheng, Japanese koto, Korean gayageum, Mongolian yatga, etc. sharing striking similarities. This paper makes a comparative study between the gayageum and the koto in terms of their structural characteristics, basic playing techniques, historical significance, origins and tuning methods.
